Australian triathlete wins 2009 Ironman World Championship in Hawaii

12 October 2009: Sydney’s Craig Alexander has won the 2009 Ironman World Championship which took place on Hawaii’s Big Island on Saturday October 10 in which competitors had to swim 3.8km, cycle 180 km and run a full marathon of 42km.
It is the fourth-straight year that an Australian has won the event and in the Ironman’s 31 year history Alexander, 36, became the first Australian to successfully defend his title. He also won the event in 2008. Alexander conquered the 226.3 kilometre course in eight hours, 20 minutes and 21 seconds.
Hawaii’s Big Island plays host to the annual Ironman championship where the top 1,800 triathletes from around the world converge on the sunny Kona coast. This unique island bordered by magnificent coastline holds diverse surroundings from World Heritage listed active volcanoes to snow capped mountains. Hawaii’s Big Island has something for even the most adventurous traveller.
