Hawai’i To Host 2011 APEC Summit
Media Release:
24 November 2009: The Hawaii Tourism Authority is excited and proud to have Honolulu named the host city for the 2011 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders meeting (APEC). President Obama, who was born in Hawaii, made the announcement last week at the APEC Leaders Summit in Singapore.
As well as drawing the world’s leaders, APEC summit attendees are estimated to draw 10,000 people to the Islands of Aloha® which will cement Hawaii’s place as not only a major tourist destination but as a business and economic destination in the region.
“Hosting the APEC meetings will dispel the misconception held by some that Hawaii is not a significant global business destination,” Mike McCartney, Hawaii Tourism Authority president and CEO, said in a statement.
“With APEC leaders from 21 Pacific Rim nations gathered on the island of Oahu, the world will see that Hawaii is an ideal place to conduct business due to our strategic location in the Pacific and our multicultural diversity.”
The APEC meeting will be held from 12-20 November 2011 and will be the first in the United States since Washington state hosted APEC leaders in 1993. To learn more about Hawaii and the Islands of Aloha please visit www.hawaiitourism.com.au
